Following a consultation with the client, it was very apparent quickly that Architectural Wrapping would be perfect for this refurb.

Through the utilisation of Architectural Wrapping, HG Surface have helped Volute, a London based construction company transform the exterior of 44 separate apartments (which they had just converted from an existing commercial unit) in the Church Crookham area.

The Challenge

The challenge the HG Surface team had for this project really was one that was unique. The client in question wanted to totally overhaul the exterior environment with a much more colourful and vibrant feel. In order to meet the desired results and following a consultation with the HG Surface team it was agreed that Architectural Wrapping, and more specifically 3M IJ40C-10 would be the best way forward to achieve the goals Volute had.

‘‘After speaking to the Volute team, it was very apparent quickly that Architectural Wrapping would be perfect for this refurb. From the colour matching capabilities 3M IJ40C-10 has that allowed us to match the array colours required, to the durability this solution gives you, to even the cost-effective nature this method of refurbishing would bring alongside the added benefit of having the option of removing the vinyl at a later date. All in all, wrap was a real no brainer.’’ Said Lauren Siddons, Director of HG Surface.

‘’The brief from the customer was that they were wanting to wrap the exterior panels using 4 colours to give the impression at a glance that certain areas looked 3D, using a teal and brown to follow a sustainable feel to the project. The customer, Volute, had also wanted the lightwells of the building to be wrapped in seamless vegetation prints, to really drive home this sustainable theme .’’

The Project

Over 1200m of vinyl was used for this project, and the job itself took approximately 5 weeks to complete from start to finish. The project didn’t come without its challenges, though. Printing large quantities of consistent solid colours isn’t always as straightforward as it sounds, for example, the ever-changing temperatures in the UK can affect the prints, a potential problem HG managed to navigate safely however. On top of the obvious cladding overhaul, the HG team wrapped over some of the windows using printed contra vision, which would allow the residents to see out. HG also wrapped the doors and window frames in silver to round off the job.

Lauren added: ‘’When it comes to the results of this project, the before and after pictures really do tell the full story. The contrast from before to now is amazing, it’s safe to say we definitely met the objective of creating a more vibrant welcoming to visitors of the apartments. Our clients were absolutely delighted with the results too which is the most important thing at the end of the day isn’t it?’’
